Review - New York Times

For the best effect, an adult should read “The Knish War on Rivington Street” to a child. The book, about an actual New York event more than 100 years ago, tells how an immigrant family sold Mama’s knishes from a pushcart on the Lower East Side, and then opened the first knish store on Rivington Street. A rival store came along, a price war ensued and the owners of each added gimmicks to attract customers. The mayor came and could not decide between the baked round knishes of one store or the square fried ones at the other. The rivals made peace, and Rivington Street was named the knish capital of the world. The book includes recipes: “The Knish War on Rivington Street,” by Joanne Oppenheim with pictures by Jon Davis
